Hello everyone.

I had a CV joint fail while on track a couple weekends ago. 365 whp, 306 wtq on 9 psi. Limited to 6 psi on track. Using a set of Insane Shafts for the EP3 rated for 500 HP (32mm axles). Front left outer CV had an unplanned disassembly. Sounded terrible but I'm glad it wasn't the engine (again) or transmission (also again). All the tracks I have been to go clockwise so the front left takes most of the abuse.

About 5 years old with maybe a dozen track days. Less than 30k miles. I'm not too upset that one broke, but a little disappointed. It does get track time but not "that" much. Boots weren't ripped or leaking. There were no warning signs that I noticed.

A replacement set is about $500, just the left left is $250. I have no idea how much better these axles are than stock, if at all. A stock replacement is $50-75. Only other options I can find are below:
-Insane Shafts 1000 HP rated axles ($1000)
-DSS level 0 axles ($640 but no warranty or HP rating listed as they're basically stock replacements)
-DSS level 5.9 axles rated for 850 HP ($2420)

I really cannot find any other upgraded axles besides these two brands. Was debating upgrading to 5 lug and 36 mm axles over the winter. Maybe stock axles would be an option at that point? Can't really justify the price of DSS.

Ive never broken a set of 36mm stock Type s axles, also if you use slicks it’s almost necessary for 5.9’s. Other wise, in my experience with my ep3 it’s always been stock 36mm axles. And yes, they outperform the “500hp” insane shaft axles, i friggin hate those things

My vote, oem 36mm

Thanks, @gtimportfanatic. I haven't had any issue with the Insane Shafts set until now. I have read quite a few negative comments about them since purchasing. I really should have swapped to 36mm and 5 lug when I had the chance ~5 years ago, but I really didn't want to buy two new sets of wheels.

I have a used set of EP3 32mm axles on the workbench. I'm tempted to just install them and hope for the best until I'm ready to upgrade.

you need the proper greases in these for track use.
Neo HPCC #1 for the outers and OKS422 for the inner tripods. The OEM joints from the EP3 Type R work like this on track in the Elise forever to well over 400HP. There are not that many with 500+HP, but they also use this combo.
Pour point of these greases is above 200°C. It plainly does not go runny.

The grease should definitely help, but I believe the biggest culprit comes down to axle length and angle at which it sits. As the axle gets loaded up and the suspension goes in to bump, the hub goes closer to the transmission, this needing an exact proper length. Think about the axle being bottomed out and basically immovable and there's a motor trying to spin it causing immense amounts of friction. That would be my theory at least as I witnessed a lowered K24 swapped Integra go through an axle per track day until he switched to a different length axle solving all of his problems. Even autozone axles at his 300hp with an Os Giken diff and sticky tires are still fine to this day
