I thought that you guys might like to know that I did a 6 speed conversion to my element this weekend. I realize that this is more a performance site, and I did this for fuel economy and drivability, but I got a lot of information out of previous discussions on this site. I basically just added the 0.659 6th gear onto the existing gears. It is running very smoothly. I think that the most interesting part is that there is no reason that this couldn't be done with the 4WD version.

Thanks. So far its running pretty smoothly. I did it myself. It was really pretty easy. I actually bought more parts than I needed because I didn't want to be forced to order more with the tranny apart. But the cost of just the parts I needed was only about $200. Next time I'll do it for cheap.

so, u didnt have to change the 3-6 gears and the shift forks and all? just added a 6th? what parts did u need
Thats right. I just pulled the distance collars and taper cone, put in the needle bearing and added the sixth gear on top. I did change the reverse shift lever and modified the shift arm interlock. Total cost was ~$200. I saw no reason to change 3-4. I wanted those ratios and they still use the same shift lever. I did replace 5th with a new gear, but I don't think that was necessary.

- Shifter mechanism parts -
Reverse shift piece 24240-PNS-000
Shift arm interlock (get from TSX, 06 Civic Si, or modify the old one)

- Main shaft parts -
Mainshaft 6th gear 23590-RAS-A00
Needle Bearing (35 x 41 x 24) 91103-RAS-003
Collar (28 x 35 x 24) 23916-PNS-000

- Countershaft parts -
Special bolt 90011-PPP-000
Countershaft 6th gear 23491-RAS-000

I elongated the slot in the interlock by the width of one shift fork. This was to allow it to get into reverse. The metal in red was removed. I'm sure I could've just puchased the factory part from a 6spd, but I didn't have time to wait.
Bad-ass...what 6th gear is that?

Bad ass, I thought about trying it several times, gas mileage was the main reason. Tachin 4g's doin 80 just sucks the gas down. Do you have any pics of the install? -Chris

That was exactly my motivation. The gas mileage gains have been impressive 5-6mpg better. I am now getting 30-31mpg consistently on the highway. Here is a thread that I posted over at the element forum. It has some photos from the conversion.

in the write up on his explanasion for the reverse shift piece and the 5th n 6th gear shift fork is confusing. at one point you don't need the 5th and 6th gear shift for (you can use the exsisting 5th gear fork but with new reverse shift peice). but than he says you do need the 5th and 6th shift fork. So a simple question would be, my ep3 has a pin that holds in the reverse shift piece, so i replace w/ new and use original 5th shift fork for 5th n 6th or are the forks diff sizes and such???????:confused::confused:

The write up has two styles of 5th gear shift forks mentioned: One has the reverse shifter attached by a pin (like yours), the other (found in a CRV) has the reverse shift piece welded to the shaft. If it is attached by a pin, then you simply drive out the pin, remove the reverse shift piece and reuse the original shift fork. (If it is welded then you throw it away).

It functions perfectly as long as your are careful to adhere to the procedure. The measurements for thrust and shim thickness are critical. They are easy to perform, but critical to function. If you skimp on this part of the procedure you can have problems with tranny damage, excessive wear, noise, and popping out of 6th gear.

gotchya, well i guess i am an unlucky ep owner cuz mine is welded. but anycase, i have both manuals 04 si n 06 si, and i compare one to the other. the only other ? i have is my 3rd & 4th fork is different from an 06 si 3rd & 4th fork. where the half box notch is extended from fork for shift action (at shift lever), the 06 si has another extension that goes diaginally downware for a couple inches. does anyone know what it does and would i need that for any reason?
