Right guys, I've spoke to various people and there seems to be varying opinions on where the fluid reservoir tank can be placed on a rotrex setup.
In the instructions it says the tank needs to sit level or lower than the charger itself.. However 80% of the pictures I've seen have people placing them anywhere in the engine bay (easiest place).

My problem is I have VERY limited space and it is going to be very hard to find a nice place for the tank to sit if I mount it lower than the charger...(I have the kraftwerks race kit) if I can mount it anywhere my job is much much easier but I don't want to do this if it has any nasty effects on how long the charger lives for.

So, what setup you guys got? Pictures? Problems etc etc

Thanks Danny

On my twin charge setup one tank is below and one was above. The Charger with the high tank started to leak oil into the airstream. I was in contact with Rotrex's Lead Engineer over flow data so I asked the question. He said there would be nothing wrong with the unit and to relocate the tank. I did this and the oil leak stopped immediately. He said this is clear in the instructions and must be followed.

As I assume the pressure seal on the shaft has low friction so if you mount the tank higher than the changer then the head of oil pressure can siphon out the oil. He said they will gradually be changing to a new seal and it will become mandatory to fit the tank at the same height or lower.

I would read the latest instructions on the Rotrex.com site and follow it closely. Belt tension is also very important for reliability. Too tight or too loose can cause shaft failures. (I have had no problems) You must run a manual override and adjust your tension to 85 to 100N per rib. Rotrex specify 75-120N pr. rib range however I have measured only (440N/7ribs)= 62N with the stock tensioner. This is covered in my thread.
I run 700N (measured using a Boroughs Gauge) as more might cause alternator bearing problems.

This photo was before I relocated the lower SC tank. Also make sure you blow some compressed air into the tank with the inlet banjo on the SC loose so your oil lines are full before your first startup.

How do these manual tensioners mount up? I think Rotrex need to change their instructions :-/

Thanks for your replys :)

Ok, so I've been in the garage and managed to find a nice place for it to go and the top of the reservoir is in line with centreline of the charger..

Jaydee, unfortunately I cannot fit an override to the tensioner due to space, I'm going to fit an extra idler pulley on the kraftwerks kit to give more belt wrap.. I'm not 'too' fussed if I get a little slip as it might save the charger (c38-91) a little maybe.

Good that you have found a lower position. The information on the oil tank position you have posted is old and not correct. As I said in my previous post Rotrex have changed the seal and revised the manuals and the tank must be repositioned. The only site which is definitely correct is Rotex.com. It's down a moment ago when I tried it.

Belt slip causes 2 problems which must be addressed. Low boost you might not care about but a shaft failure you will! The stock tensioner's maximum tension gives 20% less than Rotrex recommend as a minimum. IMO the stock tensioner flick's around and the change in belt load is causing Rotrex problems. A manual override on the stock tensioner works well.

That's a fair point Jaydee, it doesn't explain why it's never been a problem on the 1000's of c30-** conversions out there..

Unless I can add a manual override somewhere else it's a 'no can do' for me :(
I've had to make my own more compact mount to fit the engine into my chassis.. (Peugeot 106) so will not allow me space to run one in the usual position.

Btw thanks for your help and input as always

No problem. Rotrex have changed the seal as they believe it will be more reliable, but it requires the low mounting tank.
