So I decided to build a motor for my EP3. Instead of taking the easy way out and just swapping a K20A2 for $1500, I decided I would build a K20A3. I knew I would rather have a rebuilt motor over a used motor that would be more likely to grenade on me at any moment. I figured if I tackled all the weak points of the A3 I would be good. I am using a RSX A3 over the EP3 A3 so I will have the A2 oil pump. Next I am tackling the unbalanced crank shaft by using a K20A2/Z1/Z3 crank shaft. I will be using Eagle rods and OEM A2 11.0:1 or Supertech 11.5:1 pistons. Finally I will be using a K24A1 cylinder head with K20A2 cams and rockers. Also I plan on using Supertech valves and valve springs in the head for added security. I am almost certain I will be using the EP3/RSX-S throttle body and intake manifold for better mid range power. My goal is 200WHP +/- for my build.

*I haven't mentioned every little part I plan to use but this is just a rough sketch.

IF you really look at it I will probably make over 200whp, but 200whp is my goal. You could buy a KMOD engine for a couple thousand more than I will spend on my build and make the same whp most likely, negating torque of course.
Lol your comment makes no sense. A stock K20a/z1/z3 with decent bolt ons will make around 220+whp, a built K24 will prob almost make as much torque as you will make HP.

To each his own though. GL

I think you missed the point of, not wanting to swap in a used motor, you may feel it's a waste, but I don't feel like taking the chance of having a used motor go on me. My point is that my build is still cheaper than buying a built motor. Only till after I'm done with it will anyone be able to tell if it was really worth the money.

can't you use a TSX throttle body? or the j35??? Oem part.
also intake mani, why not get RBC or RRC that should help with some power and oem.
and RSX type S oil pump might be better, its higher revving. i have a tsx, I'm just curious if this can be done?
anyway looks like it will be a fun car to drive. GL with the build.

Thank you :D I'm using the oem throttle body on my ep3, its the same as the rsx type s oem. I have considered a hybrid racing throttle body but I'd rather just spend the money towards a turbo. Also the rsx A3 has the rsx type s oil pump. I am considering a rbc intake manifold, but IDK if I want to spend the money and loose mid range power. Again I'd rather put the money towards a turbo.

i have an ep3 as well and i hit 220 without all that... i swapped for an a2 head with rbc intake kpro skunk2 70mm exhaust and injen ram air. never switche the pistons. and idk why u would use the k24a1 head with a2 cams and rockers, might as well use the whole a2 head. oh ya and its was tuned.

I have almost the exact setup now...save the forged pistons/rods...using z1 cams in a a1 head...a3 block...good luck with the build...I don't know the hp but it's probably over 200...oh yea a prc manifold will bolt on as well...keep up the updates bro and good luck.

You ask why K24A1 head vs K20A2/Z1 head? Well simple, it just flows better for what I want. It has better low end and mid range than the PRB, which is great for daily driving. It was also a lot less money than a PRB head. I won't have three lobe v-tech but I can still run a two lobe setup. Should I have waited around to maybe find a good deal? Maybe, but I do know it makes more power than the stock A3 even with the stock A1 cams and that is good enough for me.

It's nice to see other people with a similar idea. To me it's not about top numbers but useable power and reliability. I am also considering going with Type R RRC pistons and the AP1 Yellow and Blue NIPPON HATSUJO valve springs over supertech. Just based on the fact that they are reliable factory parts that cost less.

When I had my K20A3 all I could think about was a 3-lobed cam....my EP3 made 136whp with a SRI and stock ECU. This was a low reading dyno.

Still I could see the advantage the K20a, K20a2, K24a2 had to offer. It had the same TQ plus more in the mid-range as the A3 and a racing edge top end ability.

I hope you find what you are looking for. However, since people are building the A3 and or using the A3 block for spec building cuz no need for oil squirters. There is value to the A3 longblock. Since there is value to the engine I would sell it and go for the race designed engine. You will thank me later when you are pulling past the A3.
