How many miles on the engine? With the exception of high mileage causing gummed up rings and oil consumption, I'm not aware of any ring issue on K series.
The vehicle has 160K, as I mentioned in the OP. I was wandering if the bad oil rings were due to neglect in the past, or defect? That was the main issue, should I use Honda rings or aftermarket? Thanks. How many miles on the engine? With the exception of high mileage causing gummed up rings and oil consumption, I'm not aware of any ring issue on K series.
Thank you. I figured on checking the bore once the head is off. They look okay with the boroscope. What I was really wondering is that if there's a problem with the Honda rings, would there be an issue with the replacement OEM rings? Is this issue because of owner neglect? I've wondered about just getting a JDM replacement engine, but if there is a ring issue, the new engine might have the same problem. I was hoping to do a quick re-ringing job with the engine in the car. Thanks for responding.if the bores and their hone pattern is still fine, you could renew the rings with OEM quality rings. But I doubt it. You'll likely see blank spots and scratches in the bore at high mileage, especially if "sports" air filters have been used or the engine suffered from overheating distorting the bores.
More common and proper repair if the bores are worn would be to rebore the engine to next available size, e.g. 87.25mm and fit new pistons and rings.
My mistake! I skim through posts a bit too quick sometimes. The vehicle has 160K, as I mentioned in the OP.
Do you have a picture of the hone structure? When the rings are worn, it is very likely the hone depth is done too. The boroscope can't tell you much about the oil consumption, the eye and finger nail can tell you much more. When the later two are indicating an issue, then the bore is slightly off, but when the bore would be off already then we are talking about a different issue.I figured on checking the bore once the head is off. I don't have a picture, but I will try to do so. I think my cheap borescope might be capable.Do you have a picture of the hone structure? Is it safe to say that the "ring issue"(if there is one) is due to owner neglect(too infrequent oil changes)? Again, I was totally unaware of this issue before buying the car. My son just talked to a guy with the same year of CR-V who says his engine burns more oil than gas.there is no problem with the Honda ring pack I am aware off. Honda use Riken and one other Japanese brand as OEM according to parts catalog.
Sure you can check it out. In the end you need to pull the head anyway.I don't have a picture, but I will try to do so. I think my cheap borescope might be capable.
If safe means 100 % sure, nope. Oil loss can have multiple sources, the rings are on first place and shows up quite often as the source, but nothing more.Is it safe to say that the "ring issue"
