Ok i really want to do this swap, but my friends are saying it will be a waste considering my car is an automatic to begin with. So would i have to swap my tranny first and get it to be a manual and then do the swap? But then i thought i would need to get like the RSX 6speed tranny, so then i would have to just discard my 5speed EX tranny if i did the tranny swap before the K20 swap? Anyways i prolly dont even know im talkin bout there. But my main concern is how much it should cost and what i would have to do first before even considering the K20 swap.

So basically i want to know how much i would have to fork over to turn my Automatic 2004 EX Civic into a 6Speed Manual Civic w/K20a2 swap. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And as far as tune ups, repairs, and warranties go...What do i have to look out for once i have a complete swap? Like say i start having problems with my car and it starts to run funny or somethin. Who do i take it to? The honda dealership or like an Acura dealership for inspection? And do most motors come with some sort of warranty? Or do they hold the dealership warranty? I really dont turn wrenches to often so im not so knowledgable on any mechanic work that is done on cars. So anything u can tell me would be great. thanks alot.

It would cost you a lot of money. Cannot be exact but around 10000 for the type S and more for the k20a JDM.

I hate to discourage you or tell you what to do, but this would not be a good idea. I would suggest looking into something else. Maybe a second project car so you can learn about your car.

Sure someone can do it, but id something goes wrong, you are going to be charged out the ass for someone else to figure out what is wrong.

We all pretty much started knowing nothing about our cars and over time by messing up a little, learned things here and there.,

Good luck,

Well I'm not at all discouraged, i have about 3 years till im actually going to do the swap and by the time i have money saved up. Trust me, i definately am going to take advantage of the warranty on my car, considering it is practically brand new with only 10k miles on it. But im just hoping that within 3 years i will have more knowledge and experience on what im dealing with when i go through with the K20 swap. Thats pretty much why im here on this forum right now, because i want to learn.

And im gunna be taking auto-mechanic classes soon while im still in college, and i know that will be 100% helpful in my goal of achieving a K20a2 swap into my 2004 Civic Coupe. But until then, i want to try and learn as much as i can from the people here who know a lot more than me right now.

If i were you i would save your money now and find an eg or an ek with a blown motor or a shell. Something CHEAP. Then take your time and do the swap. Use your '04 as your cruiser and the eg or ek as the "fun" car.
Well i really love my car...cept there is no power in that thing...My first car was my dad's old 69' Mach1 that i had for half a year...It was incredibely fast, but barely reliable...We constantly had to care for it and fix things on it...So we sold it and i saved money to put down on what i thought had much potential to look extremely clean, hold its value, and would be much more reliable ; an 04 civic.
But im still speed hungry and if im gunna have something fast, i want it to look nice as well. I wouldn't mind having an eg or ek to work on, but it would be only for practice...I would still definatley want the swap to be done to my daily driven civic. Seeing the numbers in hp and torque, a k20 swap would definately suffice my hunger for power and style.

Their is another answer... Cars equiped with a manual transmission are cheaper than automatic's... Why don't you sell you Civic automatic, and save a little on the price of the car, and buy a Civic manual...

1- You will not lost money.
2- On the total fees, it will worth it a lot.
3- It will be easier for the swap.
4- Until you get a K-series in your car, your ride will be a bit faster with the manual transmission.

 I would say it will be the cheaper, faster, and easier.

My two cents!

Duffy2004,

Are you part of 7thgencivic.com? Check out this link:

The civic owner is doing a K20a2 swap into his 7th gen, automatic car. If the thread does not show for you the members name on that message board is "DFCivic".

Best of luck.

if it costs 10 grand for a swap, then why dont u just trade in ur civic for like on '02 rsx and pay like 3 more grand to equal out the cost, and there is ur k20 :D
i was thinkin bout that...but then where would the fun in that be...Everyone on the road would know the power of the RSX, but would be blown away by the unexpected power in the little ol Civic.

And plus, my team is sponsored by a shop that can do the labor at a very cheap price for me and i found a friend who can get me the TypeS motor and everything needed for 3grand. So as soon as my warranty is off, im goin strait for the swap. I will post pics and all that good stuff when the time comes...until then, i can only wait.

Another thing to remember...10grand for a swap is definately gunna be the MOST u would have to pay if u have to buy everything from a retail priced dealer and installed by a shop charging full price. That is obviously a price not considering any kinds of deals of any nature from a donor engine or from a shop who can hook it up. Wow, if i knew i was gunna pay $10,000 for 70 extra more HP, i dont think i would even be registered on this forum trying to find information on the subject.
