Ive read up on plenty of threads and forums on K20A2/K24A4 builds on this website and other ones. Ive heard about K20Z1/K24A2 builds but no1 really goes into much details about those. I have a K20Z1 long block and want to do the Frank build. What I wanted to know was if it would be better to go with a K24A2 short block or K24A4 short block? And if I should go with the K24A2, would the build be exactly the same as a K20A2/K24A4, as in would all the same parts be needed. I.E. K24A2 short block and internals with K20Z1 head, oil pump, etc. Thanks in advance.

With the K24a2 block, you can keep the same internals. Just slap a K24 head gasket and put the head on and youre good to go. You cant do this with the K24a4 Block. If you are planning changing the internals, then it doesnt matter which block you get. K24a2 Shortblock with K20z1 head will work just fine. It will be a good setup.

Make sure that the head gasket used matches the HEAD design.

There is two different designs, one has the coolant outlet on the end of the head(K24A2,A4, K20Z3) and the other design has the coolant outlet on the side of the head(K24A1, K20A2).

Also the K24A2 style gasket requires the coolant divertor(partition plate) to be installed as well.

Here is a pic showing the differences in gasket design, the pink areas show the differences in coolant openings,

The K24A1/K20A2 is on top, the K20Z3 and K24A2 style is on the bottom.
