I'm not talking about the big black ones. If you look below those on the side, there are these thin brown gaskets. They seem to seal nothing really.
You can notice in one of my pics I tore one in half while trying to clean the inside of my valve cover

IIRC, those are the spark plug tube seals pressed into the valve cover.

They are important because they will prevent oil from coming up the sides of the spark plug tubes. They also give another level of protection to prevent dust/grit from falling down into the head.

Nobody makes a seal if there isn't something to seal against :)
