CHICAGO (AP) - Honda Motor Co. on Thursday introduced a concept version of its Civic Si coupe, which the Japanese automaker says provides a strong indication of the upcoming 2006 production model.
The production model is scheduled for a fall launch, Honda officials said at the Chicago Auto Show.
Honda, whose U.S. sales rose 3 percent last year, is in the midst of redesigning its entire Civic lineup for 2006. The portfolio, scheduled for launch this fall, will include a four-door sedan, a two-door coupe, an even more fuel efficient hybrid version and a natural-gas powered model called the GX.
Honda sold 309,196 Civics in the United States last year, up 2.8 percent from a year ago, according to Autodata Corp. That was second in volume only to the company's Accord, one of the best-selling cars in the United States.
The Civic Si, considered the lineup's performance edition, features a 200-horsepower, 16-valve engine and 18-inch cast aluminum wheels.
"The 2006 Civic Si coupe will be the most powerful, fastest and fun-to-drive Si we've ever put on the street," said John Mendel, senior vice president for Honda's American arm.
The Civic Si coupe production model will make its debut in November at the Specialty Equipment Market Association trade show in Las Vegas.
Pricing hasn't been announced.
