Transmission will make this brief grinding noise upon cold start. Only happens when cold and it almost sounds like when you don’t have it fully in reverse and let out the clutch.

I’m stumped. (I know it’s the trans because we just swapped the engine and it was making the same noise prior to engine swap)

Are you positive it isn't the starter sticking? Old starters tend to do this, especially when it's cold out.

It could be now that I think about it… we swapped the same starter over when we did the swap.

If it's coming from the tranny...its gotta be the starter. It sound like it's coming from the top right of the engine, then maybe the VTC cam gear

I'm with Brotato
My bet on starter solenoid sticking too long on the "engaged" position. Mine did the same thing on 03 rsx. Will make same sound as trying to start the car while its running. If it ends up being the starter might i recommend denso or even denso reman. Of course diagnose issue before loading the parts cannon.

Replace starter, and you'll be fine. Had my RSX for 15 years and I think went through 2 starters with exact same symptoms.

My starter is sticking too, for about a sec after it fires up, the starter gets spun fast. How long can this go before the starter dies?

The workshop manual details on where the starter mechanism needs lubrication. Maybe redoing the grease is all it requires.
