If you don't use a check valve then when you've been accelerating hard then brake vacuum decreases. As you apply the brakes there is less vacuum to assist in braking. It is aggravating when you don't have one...I used a cheapo PCV valve that would fit the hose. I think it was less than $5. I would have gotten an OEM, but it is built into the line for an EK, so I didn't bother figuring out if any models had one that was not part of the line.
That is the only FRAM part in my car. And it still works fine after 3+ years.
