Hi there!

My car developed a stupid whining noise in the right side of the car, that is loudest when the engine is cold, and I think that when the weather is cold too..and the noise increased after change the water pump 1month ago..
Recently I´ve changed:

-Tensioner, guides and chain
-oil pump chain, guides and tensioner
-Idler pulley and tensioner pulley
-aux belt

I´ve been running the engine today with belt off and noise is there anyway.. The only thing that I can think about in this moment is crank pulley with bad rubber in the middle.. after drive the car for 10/15min the noise seems to go away or is quiet...

If someone here experienced this problem please help me!

Thank you all!

Thanks for your opinions!;)

I´ve been checking with a stethoscope and the noise is coming from the chain tensioner!! The tensioner is new but I´ve found another problem!

My car is a civic type r with a K20a2 engine..and the tensioner for my engine is the one with p/n 14510-prb-a01..but I´ve bought the replacement tensioner online, in the UK and the tensioner that was send to me is one with the p/n 14510-pna-003! Outside they look similar..but are they similar inside? Guess not..if they have different p/n is for some reason..! :(

did you change the orange guide that the oil pump chain rides on? not the "tensioner" but the big orange piece
Yes mate I've changed everything.. to avoid any problem..but I'm with problems anyway!:(
And now my car is with a chain tensioner that I found isn't for my engine.. do you know the difference between the p/n that I mentioned above?
Many thanks

If you put the wrong length oil pump chain guide on it will make that exact noise. I doubt it's the timing tensioner they all work the same to my knowledge just look different.

The type s oil pump guide is shorter than the balance shaft pump guides. If you put the long one on a type s/r oil pump motor it's too tight and makes that exact sound.

The only thing I bought online was the upper chain, tensioner and guides..the oil pump chain, guide and tensioner I've bought in a honda dealer with my car VIN.. I think they sell me the right one.. or at least I hope!:) and noise is loud near the tensioner mate.. and if they are similar why the p/n are different..:/
I can't hear very well the sound of your video..I'll will see at home..;)
Many thanks!

Comparing those 2 part numbers you listed, the PNA tensioner is found in a k20a3 and the PRB tensioner is found in a k20a2. I can't say if they are different internally though. Considering the issue you're having, I wouldn't point to the tensioner right away. For peace of mind, you can swap out the PNA tensioner for a PRB tensioner.

I know mate..and is used in K24 engine..but for some reason they have different part number, and the truth is my car use the PRB and like you said for peace of mind is better swap them..the noise I hear is very close to tensioner cover..but maybe its not related..hope it is but..let's see...

SickSilver_ep3 I've now see and listen the video and my car sounds different.. but what a machine you have there!;)
And thanks mate!

Hi Guys

What was the issue in the end?

I have a similar problem with my K20A4 engine on Honda CRV. I have replaced the timing chain and Crank gear and crank pulley oil seal, and now when i manually crank it over there is a squeaking sound coming from the oil pump tensioner area or so. Kind of sounds like something rubbing onto a rubber part. Im too scared to start the engine up again as the first time its started it didn't sound so great..... And what a mission to strip everything again!
