My EG hatch is getting a full cage built very soon and my cage builder gave me a choice between DOM and chromoly tubing. I am aware of the weight differences and OD/thickness of both but thats about it. I'd like to know your opinions on both and if it's worth it to pay the extra ~$600-700 for chromoly over the DOM.

My tubing has to be ordered from the lower 48(im located in hawaii) so shipping is gonna bite me in the ass. Id also like to know where you guys buy your tubing from.

most drag cars go with the chromoly tubing, i dont know if they have to or just want too. chromoly has a higher tensile strength but needs to be welded properly, colded welded or tig. if mig welded there are issues cracking. the weld with chromoly is the weakest point, and chromoly wont bend it breaks. i know that in roadracing a while back there was talk of them banning chromoly cages (scca). probaly because its hard to tell if its welded properly.

those articles were helpful^^^

i talked with my cage builder and ive decided on chromoly. for the full cage its gonna run me around $2500
Am I the only one that finds it a bit expensive? Guess it depends on what type of cage you're getting what car is it for?

Seems about right for a full custom spec cage

the car is for dragging. its gonna be a full tig welded chromoly cage built to the nhra rulebook.

ill get some pics up when its finished!

If your car is strictly for dragging, then order a bolt in kit from full race and have your welder , weld it in. Those cages meet all nhra specs and are like 250 shipped, you can save a couple thousand. There's no need for a crazy cage if your not doing any SCCA or NASA Events

If its chromoly you have to tig it. You can only mig the mild steel cages.

8-point Roll Bar is made from 1-3/4"x.134" Steel Tubing and is designed for "Weld-In Installation." Can be bent to retain stock rear seat, if desired and is available in Mild Steel or 4130 Tubing.

$266.50

For faster cars our CAD-Engineered 8-point cage is the answer. It comes with precision mandrel-bent 1-5/8" x .134" wall Mild Steel Tubing or is available in 4130 Chrome Moly Tubing (1-5/8"x.083") for those applications where weight considerations are of primary importance. You can choose to retain the "Stock Dash and Rear Seat" if desired.

the reason why im spending so much on the cage is because of the shipping for the material to hawaii. even if i purchased one of those pre bent cages that Stefan posted, im sure the shipping would at least double the price.

thanks for the help w/the info though everyone
