Hi,

The J35A1 seems to be the only J engine that only has "2 lobe" VTEC. How would you fit a different cam in there? (J35A4/J32A2) Would it work?

This would be in a Nissan race car, I have to start with the J35A1 since it can not have more RATED power than 215hp. Then I cam change cams, but I can not start with a more power full engine. (I know might sounds strange but I didn't make the rules)

Would run stand alone ECU.

Looks like you need the roller rockers of the VTEC J-series engine. And of course the VTEC oil supply, which is maybe bounded to the VTEC having J-series head, but I am not sure how much modification it would mean not having that head.
It has VTEC:

< 2500rpm (or whatever):
Valve 0 follows lobe0 (low lift)
Valve 1 follows lobe1 (high lift)

2500 rpm:
Valve0 follows lobe1
Valve 1 follows lobe1

I could live with VTEC always be enabled since it's a race car.
