Good info I found on the R888

This is very usefull, since it is a diferent desing that the ra1 to get the best performace out of them they need to be ran at 45 to 47 psi hot while the ra1 like around 38 psi hot, so a 40psi may be a good starting cool starting point on the R888.

Maybe that's why 949racing was recomeding me the NT01 over the R888 because almost everyone runs the R888 at the psi that the ra1 likes.

I did some searching & people that bump the psi on the R888 say they wear evenly & the more they wear the faster they get. As they wear down to the belts they behave like full slicks.

Read the info on the link below.

Please take the info in that thread with a large grain of salt!!!

That information was propagated throughout the Spec Miata community when they first switched from the RA1s to the R888s. They were told to run the tires at very high pressures, that they didn't work well at lower pressures like the RA1s. Over the course of the year, there were very few, if any, Spec drivers who figured the R888s out and actually liked them. I have heard that it is attributed to the initial information about pressures being incorrect.

2 Spec drivers that I know say the R888s are absolutely undrivable above 40psi hot. I have been running the R888s on my Honda for the past 2 seasons, and if I exceed 38psi hot the car is sliding everywhere and lap times suffer at least 1sec per 60secs(ie: 2 secs slower on a 2 min track). I actually try to shoot for 36-37psi hot, and hardly ever start above 30psi cold except in the rear.

The key is to try things for yourself and figure out what suits your driving style, your car and its setup, the track, weather/climate, etc. I have heard a few people swear by the R888s at 45+psi.... but have heard many more running at 36-38psi.

^^^^ very interesting. well right now mine at sitting at 35 psi cold, so tomorrow I will play around with some different pressures and see how it feels.

JamesL, I'm guessing you've ran R888s before, how do you like them? what has worked for you?
I am on my ~5th set right now... they are decent tires. Not great, but pretty good for a "track day" tire. I wouldn't use them if I was competing unless they were mandated as a spec tire.

My only real gripe with the R888s vs the RA1s, is that the R888s are much more sensitive to tire pressure. They have a much smaller "sweet spot", while the RA1s were fast even if you were anywhere in the ballpark.

A lot of people complain the R888s heat cycle out much faster than the RA1s, while the RA1s would stay fast until you cord them. I tend to burn through my front tires in ~16 heat cycles, so they never really have a chance to "fall off". I run the rears 2x as long, and by the ~30 heat cycle I can tell they are starting to get slower... but at that point, I have definitely gotten my moneys worth so I have no qualms about replacing them

Don't expect Hoosier like grip out them, and I think youll be fine. If you are coming from street tires, keep in mind that the R88s like to be driven with less slip angle... they don't like the driver to slide around as much. If you get the pressures correct and drive them hard, but not overly aggressive, they are a pretty quick tire.

How did it go?
okay I'm back! the car overall was set up really well. The R888s felt great, I ran them between 39-47 psi hot to try some different setups. most of the time I ran around 42 and it felt good and tire wear seemed even. Camber is set at -2.8 front -1.4 in the rear. and tire size is 225/50R15.

However, this is the first set of R compound tires I've ran, so I have nothing else to compare it to. So I may not be a great help, but I can say they are a great tire for the price. let us know what you think when you get out on them.

Good to know they worked for you. Me coming from the dunlop spec stars these. R888 should be a great improvement too. since I tried everithing to get max traction out of The spec stars.

I have some feedback on the R888s after two track days. Overall they seem to wear better at 36ish psi hot, at least in my experience.

I ran them around 42-45 hot for a few laps at autobahn over the weekend and now the centers look too worn, which i am not happy about. So I think I will be sticking to mid 30s if nothing else just to preserve tire life.

Even with 225s in the rear, I was able to rotate the back end when needed.

Anyone else?

Good to know. What was the weather temp & what was your cold starting temp point to try reach 36psi hot?

Have you thought of using a pyro or laser temp gun to see if you are driving them @ the proper heat range to get the most out of them? Idk that just came to my head.

I'm waiting for my car since it's getting painted but I don't think I be able to use those 15" in the front ever :( just bought some brakes that gonna set my track days far away. Now the smallest I can go is 16" in the front now. It's gonna be a while before I can get the money to buy 16" wheels & R888 + track day spences.

Just a update on the azinis 615k, after 3-4 months of very sparse street use 4 race days and 1 1/2 lapping days they seem to have just plane fallen off and push in every corner now. At there best we were 1.1 sec behind a set of shaved RS3's, so I guess there not to bad but really lack longevity as far as heat cycles go. No slow degrading of traction just feeling good for being what they are to junk.
