Basically, i have a mechanic(who most of you know on this forum) who has had my car for 6 weeks, still isnt finished, and now decides to quit working on it...and leave my car outside the shop.

Well, it all started off about 2 months ago. I had found a dude down in houston that is pretty knowledgeable about k20 swaps, that was going to do the swap for pretty cheap. He told me to order all the main parts, which i did. Two weeks before i dropped the car off, i ordered: 4-2-1 dtr-fab, golden eagle fuel rail, hasport mounts, camp1320 axles, and karcepts shifter relocater kit. My mechanic said that he would order all the misc parts. So, two weeks after i order all of the parts, i drop the car off at houston. I didnt have a motor at the time, but i was going to buy a k20a in town that day. Turns out the one i was suppose to buy, didnt come with an ecu. So i told him i would call around town, find a motor, and have them ship it to his shop.

After a week of looking, i found that the k20a w/o ecu was the best price. So a week later, I drove all the way down to houston again and bought the motor, a type-s ecu, shifterbox, and shifter cables. I also gave my mechanic $1,800 for all the misc parts, including kpro and his own custom harness.

He told me that the swap would take about a week once all of the parts were in. Which most of the misc parts he was buying were parts that he could get locally. So during the next week, I call him daily, never getting an answer. I also PM a lot (he is also a pretty popular member on this site) He responds to most of my pm's...So a week passes by, he pm'd me saying the car will not be ready because the ecu isnt back from hondata yet. So i told him to keep me updated and pm me asap.

For the next week i would call him daily, 5-10 times, no answer...he is getting a lot slower at responding to pm's too...sometimes it would take 3 days to get an answer. So on the 2nd of this month...he pm's me saying that he is gonna be out of town helping with some hurricane relief thing. So its all good, at least he is keeping me informed.

So the next week rolls up...he is actually keeping me pretty well informed now. He actually pm'd me 5 times that week. Saying that he is still waiting for the ecu, eplugs, and shifter clips... On the 9th of this month, he finally got the kpro'd ecu in. He said the eplugs and shifter clips should be in within the next day or so. So i was hoping that everything would be in at the end of that week.
So i call and message him the whole weekend, wondering why he hasnt told me if the car was done. Now during this whole time, i have NO CAR, so i always have to find rides everwhere. So i would tell my friend that the car should be done on the weekend. So him and I would be waiting around THE WHOLE weekend, waiting for my mechanic to call or pm. Then on sunday night he pm'd me...saying he never called or pm'd me because there were no updates...the way i see it, no updates IS an update! He could have at least let me know on friday so i wouldnt be waiting around.
Now, another thing comes into play: I am in the army, which i have finished my time, and am getting out. I am suppose to be getting out on the 27th of this month, and going back home to hawaii. The car is suppose to be shipped out on the 19th.
So here it is, the 12th and i am still waiting for the eplugs. On the 14th(wednesday) he pm's me saying the plugs never came in, and that he still needs to get a fuel return line, and the main belt. So i am still hoping that the car will be done by that weekend. I pm him and call him a million times. No answers! He finally pm's me around noon on the 17th(saturday) Saying that he is just going to go to the junkyard and pick up some plugs. That is saturday...my car is suppose to be shipped out on monday, 2 days away.

So i call him all that night, and all the next day. Nothing! So i finally get serious, and tell him that i need my car done...and if i dont hear from him by that night...im calling the cops.

So he pm's me back right away, saying:
"You can pickup the car later tonight. The car isnt running. You will need to have it towed. The exhaust is hanging and an axle isnt in (intermediate shaft didnt come with bolts). I havent finished the harness, and there still are a few missing pieces that I have been trying to locate. I will get the car on the ground and any of your parts put in the hatch. I would wait a few hours before heading down here, as I need to put away equipment from a sidejob."

So im like wtf! The government is not going to ship a car that isnt running!

So i end up talking with nikos on sunday night. He is friends with the dude, so i guess he knows more about whats going on then i do, cause i learned more about the car talking to nikos, than i did with the mechanic. So anyways, nikos calms me down..saying that he is going to ship off plugs on monday priority mail..and that my mechanic could have my car done by tuesday or wednesday.

So everything is fuckin cool, except the fact that i missed my shipping day. So i pm him, saying im sorry n shit for going off on him. I never get a respon...so about 5 hours ago, i start talking with nikos again. Now this time nikos says that basically the dude disappeared, and left my car outside the shop to pick up, still not driveable. If he left it outside the shop, that shit is definitly going to get stolen.

So to make matters EVEN WORSE...a hurricane is expected to hit texas friday...and my car is down in houston. So i am basically FUCKED! He has had the car for 6 weeks, and now he isnt responding at all. I wasnt going to call the cops, but now i think i am going to. I just want my car back!

Does anyone have ANY IDEAS???

Holy crap... I think I would be down there every day if I couldn't get a hold of him as much as you were not able to. Definitly press charges if he took your money and didn't finish the job. If you didn't pay him don't know how much will hold up in court since i'm not a lawyer. Though yeah... seems like you got screwed over. I'd hurry the hell up and get somebody to tow your car out of there.

hmm....

I don't know if he is trying to scam you or not, but it just seems to me that teh guy is kinda lazy and not to good at getting things doen in a timely manner. He seems like he was working on one thing at a time instaed of getting everything taken care of at once...

Did you talk to him about all of this scheduling and shipping and stuff prior to him comitting to do the work on the car?

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't FEMA evacuating parts of Houston? It's possible he's left town to avoid Rita.

My swap (EK4 hatch) took 6 weeks all up but mine was RHD and there was little to no resources for some of the steps so I was okay with it. 6 weeks for a LHD swap sounds a bit much though.

Who is the mechanic? Don't be shy.
Since im cool as fuck, im giving him to 4:00pm today to call me. If he does call me, and IS going to finish the car.....then this whole thing was just a big misunderstanding, im the fuckface, and this thread will be deleted.
If i have to come down to houston and get the car towed, im releasing his name, and probably will press chargers later. A lot of people take it seriously when someone tries to fuck over a soldier.
If i dont hear from him at all...im releasing his name, and calling the houston county police department. Then driving down to his shop, with the po po's.

HAHA but i can almost guarentee, that he is NOT going to make the deadline of 4pm.

Yeah once i hit about the 3rd week into the swap..i told him that i didnt think it was suppose to take that long...and that the car was going to be shipped out at the end of the month. I basically pm'd him at least once a day. The reason i think he might be trying to scam me, is that he says that he left the car outside the shop. Now when i go down there, the car is either going to be stolen or "stolen"...if you catch what im saying. I dont know him well enough, but he doesnt seem like the guy that would do that to an american soldier...people these days.

I would have drove down there everyday, but its a 3-4 hour drive, which i do not have a car. And even if i drove down there, chances are that he wasnt at the shop anyways.

They are evacuating most places next to the eastern side of houston...he is from the southwestern side. Even if he did evacuate...its still fucked up that he didnt tell me shit.

Fuck man i feel your frustration. I went through the same thing with a couple of twists. I didnt have my car for 8 weeks, and when it was supposed to be finished my alarm burnt up my wiring harness so i had to have another one shipped off and wait for that. I didnt really know my source but took a chance and everything worked out perfectly. The guy took his time and did it 100% right. I don't know why the guy just quit on you because thats kind of odd. But its a good thing Nikos knows em. I hope everything goes well and if you car is done right and you get it back with nothing wrong or stolen.. it is WELL worth the wait. Trust me.

It would be well worth the wait, except that the car was suppose to be shipped off to hawaii 3 days ago...plus im leaving texas next week.
The biggest thing im worried about now is the hurricane...thats what is really fucking everything up right now. Its usually a 3-4 hour drive down to houston....with all of this traffic, it will probably take 7 hours to get down there...and about 10-12 just to get back. I STILL havent heard from him yet...

yeah i was going to do it once i got back to kauai...but i had 2 months to burn down here in texas, so i decided i would do it here. I just wish i would have taken supafly's advice, and would have done this swap myself. Or even Will at hybrid-racing said he would have it done in 2 days for $1,000.
Im so fuckin pissed right now, i cant even think!! He has 30 mins to call me...

Well, as you can imagine.. I don't know the details or facts other than what has been told to me. But I think I have an idea what happened..

In a nutshell... ( and don;t get too pissed off but that is how I see it)

Customer wants a k20a swap in his car. But instead of gothering all the necessary parts prior of dropping off the car to a shop, he drops the car off with some parts or none... And doesn't leave any money for the mechanic to buy any parts...

Customer starts calling 10 times a day on a regular basis and keeps asking when the car is going to be ready.

Mechanic has a car, no motor or other parts he needs or money to buy them.

Mechanic calls around and gets 4 k20a swap quotes from ias, zerolift, hondamotorsonline, and someone else.... Customer wants best deal possible so he buys it from a company that delivers it...

So there, is the key part... The motor is there but still missing shit left and right.. At the same time, mechanic has to work a second job at a site that was hit by the hurricane so he is not around anymore.... So the progress on the car is slow... realy slow...

Customer keeps calling every day saying that he needs to pick up the car today,,,, no later than today... but no communication...

Finally, mechanic emails some pics of the car and motor letting the customer know what is missing which seems to misc parts but still important...

Customer keeps calling.emailing/pming saying that he need the car by that day no more than the day after.... etc...

Finally, customer threatens to call the cops if the car is not done that exact day...

SO mechanic tells customer, ok, come pick it up, it is not working...

At this point there is bad blood.. the customer-mechanic relationship is fucked and the mechanic doesn't want to get involved with the police so he just wants the car to be available to the disatisfied customer even in non running condition

---------------------

Now I know you are justified to feel like you were really screwed over, scammed but you did ask to pick up the car or else you would call the cops so he told you to come and get it in 3 hours as you told me... All the cop talk and your friend who is a cop and all that is just not cool when you are dealing with someone that has your car and motor... I mean... I really do not understand why would you want to call the cops when you know where the dude's shop is and you have his real name etc...

I know you were trying to scare him so that he would finish the car in time but maybe... just maybe he didn't want to have to talk to the cops so he left the car for you to pick it up because you told him... No more bs... I need the car right now.. working or not!

I know it sounds like I am defending the guy, but really I am taking a guess at his version since all I know is what you and him told me.. I can also look up the messages you guys sent back and forth but that would take time.

When you gave him the car, why didn't you pay for the whole swap but wanted to buy the parts on your own?

didnt he say he gave the mechanic $1800 for the misc parts and the mechanic said the car would be done in a certain amount of days? If he couldnt do it, he shouldnt have agreed to do the swap.

Look man, I have gone to hell and back with my backyard mechanics, I highly recommend sourcing the parts yourself for exactly this reason. MOreover, if you want it done 100% correctly, you HAVE to either do it yourself, or shell out the big bucks...

6 weeks and the swap isn't completed? Yes you are getting scammed. If not for money but for your time and patience.
If a business proposes they can do something they need to do it, and after completetion bill you for labor and parts.
Still you are at falt as well as him. You picked him...

The shop I deal with has a good rep and I hand choose them from hard research. I had a complete engine removed, brand new motor swapped in, supercharger installed, clutch, flywheel, custom MAP senor made, Kpro installed, and tuned for two days out of the whole five days it was in the shop.
As far as I am concerned not all things go smoothly like mine did, still business owner needs to bring his "A" game if he plans to stay in business.

Most importantly a customer should not have to supply parts, if the customer does he should sign a as is waver on those parts.

In this situtation, calling the cops will not help, writing Better Business Berau
will. If you have put up the money for the motor, and existing bolt up parts; and he needs to do the rest then charge you for labor. If parts from the motor are missing he needs to take care of that.
Next time order the motor first before you drop the car off.

i hate to quote myself nikos, but yeah i did give him money once i got the motor. I admit, on that first week, i should have never dropped off the car. That day he never asked for any money for parts or anything. If he would have asked, i would have gave. So anyways, by the 2nd week, he had the motor, most of the important parts, and the $1,800 for misc parts which i gave him...since then it has been 5 weeks....

not true, i have told him twice that i was gonna call the cops. I told him i would call the cops if he didnt call or pm me back, not because i needed my car that day!

well, when i dropped off the car, i had a friend with me that was cop. The whole time i was talking to james, he sat in his car because he said it didnt seem right. He took down all of the license plate numbers and everything! He is the one that told me that this dude is probably going to try to fuck me over. I told my friend not to worry about it, that i dont think this dude will fuck me over. After 5 weeks passed, i start having 2nd thought...

i dont believe i ever said anything about it working or not....because the government will not ship a car that is not working. Right after he pm'd me saying that i should come pick up the car, I responded saying that we should work something out....i never got a response

He told me that i should buy most of the parts on my own, so it doesnt feel like im getting ripped off on parts....
