First off, massive shout out to Adam at Speed science https://www.speedscience.co.nz/?gclid=Cj0KCQiA962BBhCzARIsAIpWEL2z87qjykyrShz09EZfNI3U8yFTcYh3UWPvnl9T5LmTRvIINZ6mJmIaAmNeEALw_wc

was a big help with finding me the parts i needed including some hard to find bits at the moment.

and Brian and the gang over at vtec academy for the knowledge bombs in my ear holes... highly recommend checking out vtec academy live for taco Tuesdays.

and of course hasport mounts

I have quit my job to build a YouTube channel (would appreciate a follow if you enjoy the content). https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJaqDTwsTs6Rx3vrAaIrSsA

First major project is my wife's first gen RD1 Honda CRV and like the title says its getting a K Swap.

It's not the first time the RD1 has been on my channel, I have a series on dismantling it for vinyl wrap and refreshing plastic trims.

this is how it started life ... Spanish rose and a bit tired but with the nice oem extras. sun roof, WANG, nudge bar, nurf bars etc

104839

104830

stripped it down

104831

104832

gave it a cut and polish and then attempted vinyl wrapping

104833

104834

For the k swap i needed to upgrade to 5x114.3 hubs, unfortunately i didn't document this as time was an issue but i still have the donor crv that we will be swapping more bits off of soon.

i also had a Honda odyssey i was flipping that ended up being a cvt mechanical write off so i pulled the engine and kept the wheels and new tyres, the rest went to the wreckers.

my wife decided she liked the 18" rims over the stock steel ones i had on the freshly swapped 5x114.3 hubs ...

104835

not bad.. kinda looks like a drug dealer now... but it's temporary as she wants the offroad look, wide steelies a lift and some off road tyres.

i was waiting on some transmission work to be finished on my S2000, so while that's taking up room in the garage it's time to unbox a bunch of goodies from Speed Science and start getting the k24a3 reading for its new home.

If anyone is interested here is a link to the s2000 content and the s2k

here are some of the parts needed for the swap. in my case the chassis is auto so i needed manual crv parts to suit.
104841

104842

104846

104843

104844

104845

Manual pedal box with clutch pedal and master.
Manual cluster.

JDM k24a3 200hp variant with a 50 degree vtc and a k20 oil pump with chain and guide to suit.

hybrid ek conversion harness and the ussal swap kit, hondata etc etc

AWD gearbox.....

I couldn't find a awd manual box so it ended up being cheaper to buy a whole manual rd5.

Here is a video covering the parts , the rd5 and the trip to wellington to pick it up .

with the gearbox sorted it was time for some upgrades to the k24a3.

installing the vtc, chain, chain guide and oil pump.

Now it was time to strip the interior in preparation for mounting a shifter, fitting a clutch system and a good time for a general clean up.
104853

In my opinion its not worth doing this swap without using the sub frame from an eg civic or dc2 integra. Using the crv's stock sub frame compromises the axles ect in the same way it does for an ek... basically treat the rd1 as a large ek civic....

You will also need the steering rack from a dc2 or dc1 so its probably best to get both a the same time.

in my case I could get a free crashed eg civic from a farm about 40 mins drive away....
so went and picked up a eg civic full of spiders and aids, pulled it apart for its sub frame .
104854

This is the best way to do it as you get to keep a lot of really important bolts especial for the sub frame... your going to need them later as the crv sub frame is thicker at its mounting point... you will need the shorter bolts from the eg or dc.

Removed the dash handbrake to make room for the clutch pedal.
on the jdm crv there is a spot on the firewall for a clutch system but on the automatic chassis its being used for a dash hand brake...

so that was going to need to be removed and eventually converted to a floor hand brake system

Finally made space for the rd5 crv I purchased for its gearbox, axles, half shaft, shifter etc etc … to be stripped down for parts

With the gearbox and engine removed from the donor rd5 crv it was time to mate its awd gearbox with the jdm k24a3 from a accord cl9.

105058

Time to get started on the rd1 crv, first off the b20 needs to go....

105059

With the engine now removed from the crv it was time to get it ready for the k24 and ekk2 mounts.

This means fitting an eg or dc2/dc1 (jdm) subframe just like you would with an ek civic. The only major difference being you need to use a integra steering rack (dc2/c1) so that you can swap over the pinion from the rd1 rack to the dc2 rack before fitting it.

The eg pinion is to small to use. The reasons for swapping over he pinion is because the steering column meets the rack outside of the firewall on the crv.

There is a probably a better way of making these two parts work or maybe its just because my application is right hand drive but either way it required me to also have custom lines made for the rack. Multiple test fits of the engine where required.... yay

105060

105061

105063

Pull the engine back out..... send the rack off to have lines fitted.
While I wait its time to get the loom ran on the engine, swap out the drive by wire and start looking at what sensors I need to work with the dc5r loom.
Also a good chance to fit the hybrid fuel rail

105062

With the engine back out this gave me a chance to move the abs pump for more clearance to the exhaust manifold.
great sucsess, and the lines now clear.... just

105064

IT fits....

Making some decent progress, Automatic chassis now has a clutch pedal and lines. A complete fuel system with a upgraded pump and fuel pressure regulator.
Managed to get oem rd1 shifter interior to fit around the k series shifter

105067

105068

105069

____

Wrinkle wrinkle mafuckahs. Cheap but epic mod!
While I wait for parts might aswell make the rocker cover look decent
105070

105071

____

Still got time to kill so I got to work on a charge harness and sorting out the grounds.
My loom has the charge harness separated already.
So I used a the b20 crv starer wire
and the rd5 alternator power wire, I just had to flatten the terminal on the rd5 k20 wire to make it work with the rd1 crv fuse box/ power distribution block

Starting to look really good imo I like the oem-ish look.
Adams tucked loom is epic to btw.. made here in new Zealand with extended harness at the fire wall... works lhd rhd and most rwd set-ups

Got the hybrid racing conversion harness in, soon as the rear bracket arrives we can learn how to use a kpro and test start the engine
105078

Still waiting on the awd bracket from hub city..... (it took 3 months) thanks to covid and the fact im on an island the world basically forgot about until lord of the rings ( HA! Gaayyyy), nah those movies are sick... especially if you like walking and midgets / little people ?

Anyways lets get the heater lines sorted.

105079

105080

if it works, is it really that stupid ? time will tell.

Rear bracket arrived !! ( 3 months)
105081

with the rear bracket installed it was time to fire up the laptop and upload some garbage to the k pro and start this pig...
but the crv had other ideas with a combination of oem inhibitor issues park/clutch safety switch , park switch lockout ( key wouldn't come out of ignition ) and a ignition switch that took a shit at the most awkward time .
Did finally get the thing running. Had to ground two wires... details in the video and pictures bellow

This is me shamelessly posing because thumbnails with faces do better.... like a slut trying to appease the people through analytics … please subscribe I need to eat
105082

these are the two wires you need to ground

Have just finished the power steering lines as of yesterday so we are now completely upto date on the build.

Next week radiator....

105085

Can anyone help with some info ( fyi I will be googling this and trying it regardless), my b20 axles are auto.. but they have the abs rings I need for well... abs. The abs rings will not transfer to the rd5 manual k axles I have, the outer cv diameter of the k axles is to large for the b series abs rings.

Does anyone know if the b series outer cv will transfer to k series axles.. basically they are dc5 or usdm rsx. (rd5)

Cheers, Tony
