Default How to use an 06 Si trans with your 02-04 engine

I've seen a bunch of threads like this. So I'd like to clarify a few things to make it work with an 02-04 wiring harness.

What you need:

06+ Civic Si transmission
1 1/16" drill bit
02-04 rsx speed ring gear Part #41312-PPP-000
02-04 rsx shifter mechanism
02-04 rsx shifter cable holder
02-04 rsx VSS

First off you need to modify the bellhousing to accept the VSS. In order to do so you need to split the cases of the trans in order to drill it. You also need to install the speed ring gear while inside. (See your manual on how to do this) I didn't have time to take pics of this.

For viewing purposes you will end up with something like this:

Now you can install the speed ring gear onto the diff. Its a slight press so hammer will slide it on. It will slide over the bearing!

Now you have this:

Now the tricky part to drill out that case. The 06 si trans has a bolt where the VSS should go but its the wrong size and its thread. But that is the exact location. So you don't need any pilot holes.

For reference of bolt:

Drilling this should be almost perfect. I'd suggest using a drill press (as i did). But you need to secure the case and drill straight! This took a lot of time to set up. 2 hours to be exact. Unfortunately I don't have any pics of my setup because my camera was MIA.

Once drilled:

In the pic above you'll see a little recessed hole. This is where you need to drill and tap to hold the vss in. (i'll edit this for exact size tap)

Drill and tapped. I did grind the top of it flush so the VSS would sit flush with the case as see below:

Now clean out that case! Use break cleaner and get all the chips and aluminum crap out! This is a very important step.

Next put the cases back together as per the manual. I'm not responsible for you being an idiot if you mess this up.

Now you can install it on the car. It bolts up perfect. But i did take out the two dowel pins for ease.

You cannot use the 06 shiftermechanism with an rsx shifter box. Its very backwards and will not even shift with the car. I tried. It gets jammed.

Now install the shifter mechanism from an 02-04 rsx. It is not a perfect match. Two of the bolts will line up. A third is way off. The fourth is there but no hole. So for that 4th that is off, I drill and tapped that. Now you have three bolts that secure it. I used a good amount of honda bond to make sure it doesn't leak. That fourth hole that doesn't line up will need to be closed off or oil will come through it. A small bolt will do.

For reference. The bolt that doesn't line up is on the upper left. The bolt that needs to be drill and tapped is upper right.

Next install the rsx shifter cable holder. You'll only need to use two of the three bolts. Bolt it down. No need to drill and tap the third (this is the bolt in the middle)

All installed:

Have fun with your new LSD and awesome gear ratios!

Yes you could swap cases blah blah. That is not the point here.

Everything on the trans has been 100%.

I'm having a clutch issue but that's something with my clutchmasters fx300 not disengaging all the way. I have to figure that out soon.

Adjust the Throw on the Clutch pedal.. I had a similar problem with my ACT.

Nice sticky BTW. I posted up the same process a while back, but you documented it better.

BTW<

I have done the same procedure, and I also seem to have the same issue regarding my clutch disengaging randomly (mostly under decel in gear). I have a Comp Stg 4 though. I dont see how it could be related to the trans, but what are your symptoms? I have tried adjusting the pushrod to no avail.

Did both of you get your clutch issues worked out? Is it still disengagine? I wonder if that has something to do with the swapping parts? Keep us updated. Thanks

I just got this resolved the other day. It was a Clutchmaster issue with the FX300. I needed to put a washer behind the pivot ball. All is well now.

I've got about 200 miles on this setup so far and no issues. This week i'lll put about 700 on it. It will be the true test before I give her hell at an auto-x this weekend.

Great write-up here. It's good to see this detailed. I was considering this at one point but decided to try making the stock 06 Si tranny work with my setup. I like challenging myself. I'm considering using the TSX or 06 Si shifter and for the VSS issue, I'll see if my S2000 cluster can convert it since it has a VSS OUT for systems that depend on the lower frequency signal.

drhonda-are you talking about the washer that is listed in the parts catalog number 22103-PNA-003. It is a small bushing/washer...or is it just a plain washer. Is this a stock item or an addition?

No not that washer.

This is a washer i bought at home depot and put a behind the pivot ball. There is a thread about it on here somewhere. Do a search for clutch geometry on here or club rsx.
