Some info/help needed with 05 speedo

Well, when I first searched about the speedo problem, I found that one guy said all he did was get a 02-04 sensor and speed gear....well, this is what I've found, first hand.

Since my 05 is the first K if delt with, I found out while putting in my lsd that I need more than just the sensor and gear. This is a pic of the clutch case and tranny case, on the tranny case (right side) are two holes, the bottom one is for the magnetic pick-up speedo.

And a comparison of the sensors (05 magnetic pick-up, left -- 02-04 gear type, right)

But, I quickly saw that there is a bolt where the 02-04 speedo is placed, so I thought that this is why I would only need to gear and sensor

Here is the DC5-R lsd (left) and the stock 05 open diff (right) compared. The speed gear is already on the lsd, so I didnt need to get it.

To my dismay, the sensor does not fit.

I planed on just buying a clutch case from honda since it was only ~280, which is cheaper than a used tranny. But I soon scrapped that idea when I found out that one of the bearings needed for the case was another ~250 bux, plus another bearing and bushings.... so I just bought a used tranny online.

I was going to drill out the hole so the 02-04 sensor would fit, but I doubt I will get the sensor and gear to line up and dont want to take a chance in breaking something, or ruining my case. So if any of our sponsors, or anyone, would like to compare my case with an 02-04 and try drilling/modifing it for everyone else, I dont mind donating my case for the cause.

becareful...because the speedo signal '02-'04 sensor sends is different then '05-'06 sensor

been discussed before for those trying to run the S2000 cluster in a K-swapped civic...'05-'06 speed sensor sends the correct signal to operate the s2k cluster but as of now you can't use it unless you have '05 tranny

there are two problems that the different signal presents

1.) using '05+ speed sensor will tell your 02-04 ecu you are going 100X faster than you really are...which would be a problem for a stock JDM ITR ECU b/c of the speed limiter (if you have hondate you should be ok)

2.) the 05+ signal is not compatiable with your 02-04 cluster will not give you any speed... just like using s2k cluster in 02-04 K powered swap

edit I believe brian_g stated the signal from the sensor (pickup) is sent & split - to the ecu & to the cluster

yea thats wat i was assuming but if i get a box to get rid of the speed limiter you think it should be good than?.. i have a s2k cluster in my swap so i wanna use the 05 sensor.. and yes thats true the signal does split.... sorry for thread jacking kinda
ahhhh...I get your setup now  sounds like that would work to me

"you can dooooo iiiiittttttttttt!!!!" :silly:

get that shit working & post pics....NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ended up just getting a 02-04 clutch case from a base tranny (cheap), then switching my 05 6 spd internals to that case. I ran into some troubles with the bearing for the countershaft, the size of the shaft is different where it goes into the bearing between the 05 RSX-S and the 02-04 RSX base.

But, once it was apart, there is a little plate that helps hold each bearing in.

So, once it was removed (two M6 bolts), the machine shop said they just applied heat to the other side, let the casing expand, and the bearing fell out. So they switched the bearings, I reassembled each tranny, and now I have a working speedo for my swap.

Since my 05 swap came with the complete engine harness, ecu, ignition switch, and cluster, I am going to try to get the dash harness from the place I got my motor, and sell the tranny and all together. Then someone can just get the Hondata jumper harness for the 05+ chasis for kpro.

Okay let me get this right...

So you gutted a 02-04 clutch plate and put your 05' internals into the case correct ?

With this do you get the Gear lengths of the 5 spd and still have a 6th gear ?

i have a 05' type-s and wanted to put a 05 base 5spd in and seems it's going to be a bit on the difficult side.

this was an interesting read. Although, I did a 05-06 cluster swap into my 03 and it worked perfectly fine. The only thing I did was getting my hand on the 05-06 cluster harness, the wires color code are the same but the connector was different. All I did was taking out the wires from the 03 and repin them to the 05-06 connector plug. To even simply it further, you can just tap the 05-06 harness to 02-04 harness. The speedometer works perfectly, but I did noticed that the rpm is a little off, but everything was clarified by kpro (datalog)

So just wondering if we were to define the s2k harness color code and tapping it to our orginal harness will make the s2k cluster work for our car.

I put all of the internals of the 6 spd into the 5 spd cases. It is not that difficult once you break open the tranny. Its much easier with two people b/c the gears are a little hard to grip b/c of the remaining fluid.

If you have any other questions just ask me and I'll let you know. I think there is a FAQ installing a LSD, which will be plenty enough pictures to help you out along the way.

i have one question.
what does the magnetic VSS uses to pick up the magnetic signal?

reason I'm asking is because i wanna put 02-04 type-s internals on a 2006 housing which has the magnetic speed sensor.
